The National Coming Out Day is an annual awareness day on October 11, 1988, in the spirit of feminism and the liberation of homosexuals, with an emphasis on LGBT rights to live full and thriving lives In society without having to hide their sexual orientation.
The basic belief is that homophobia thrives in an atmosphere of silencing and ignorance, and that once people discover that the people they love are gay or lesbian, who are not ashamed or afraid to admit it, they will probably learn to accept the facts and open up to the subject.
The term "coming out" means the voluntary self-discovery of a person's sexual orientation or gender identity.
The day of coming out of the closet, or in short English NCOD, was founded in 1988 by Robert Ichberg and Jean O'Leary. Ichberg, who died in 1995 of complications from AIDS, was a psychologist from New Mexico and founder of the Personal Growth Workshop - the experience. O'Leary was a political activist from New York who had been a lesbian for a long time and was at the time the head of the national gay rights of lawyers in Los Angeles. The date October 11 was chosen because it was the anniversary of the gay pride parade in Washington for gay gay community rights held in 1987.
